The Covington, Louisiana, community is mourning the loss of Chris Rushing, a dedicated City of Covington employee who died after attempting to rescue his granddaughter from the waters of Bayou Lacombe in St. Tammany Parish.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 7:43 p.m. on Wednesday near Lake Road after Rushing’s young granddaughter accidentally fell into the bayou. Without hesitation, he entered the water in an effort to save her but encountered difficulties and failed to resurface. Authorities said another woman also entered the water and was able to pull the child to safety.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and specialized rescue personnel, launched an extensive search. Five trained rescue swimmers located Rushing beneath the water, brought him to shore, and immediately began lifesaving efforts before transporting him to a nearby hospital.
Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff, Rushing later died from his injuries. His body was transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause and manner of death. Authorities have not released the child’s age, and the incident remains under investigation.
Rushing’s passing has deeply affected the City of Covington, where he served in the Cultural Arts Department. John Botsford remembered him as a dedicated public servant who earned the respect of coworkers and residents through his commitment, kindness, and service to the community.
Mark Johnson also paid tribute, describing Rushing as a compassionate employee whose generosity, welcoming smile, and desire to help others made a lasting impact on everyone around him.
