SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Two Springfield residents died following an apparent murder-suicide in a parking garage at Mercy Hospital Springfield early Thursday morning, according to the Springfield Police Department.
Police said officers responded at approximately 4:50 a.m. on July 2, 2026, to reports of a shooting at the hospital’s parking garage at 1235 E. Cherokee Street. Upon arrival, officers found Russell Ecton, 60, dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Jacqueline Ecton, 59, was found suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel transported Jacqueline Ecton to the hospital for treatment, but she later died despite lifesaving efforts.
The department’s Homicide Unit conducted a preliminary investigation and determined that Russell Ecton fatally shot Jacqueline Ecton before taking his own life. Authorities confirmed that both were Springfield residents and that their families have been notified.
Mercy Hospital Springfield confirmed that Jacqueline Ecton was employed at the hospital as a caregiver. Hospital officials expressed condolences and said counseling, spiritual care, and support services were being made available to employees affected by the tragedy.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including any events or interactions before the incident. Officials have not released a possible motive, and the investigation remains active.
