MOUNT STERLING, Ky. — The Mount Sterling community continues to honor the life and legacy of David N. Scott, a respected deputy jailer whose tragic death in 2018 left a lasting impact on his family, friends, coworkers, and residents across Montgomery County.

David Scott, 47, was fatally shot on May 26, 2018, during what investigators described as a violent incident stemming from a longstanding neighborhood dispute. According to authorities, the suspect, Frances Zaayer, allegedly fired at another motorist before going to the Scott family residence, where she reportedly forced her way inside and opened fire on David Scott and his wife, Shawna Scott.

David Scott was pronounced dead at the scene. Shawna Scott survived the shooting and later underwent multiple reconstructive surgeries as she recovered from her injuries. The fatal attack shocked the Mount Sterling community and remains one of the area’s most tragic criminal cases in recent memory.

A dedicated public servant, David Scott served as a deputy jailer with the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he earned the respect of colleagues and community members alike.
