LINCOLN, Neb. — Julia Kay (Freese) Nelson, 64, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on June 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her death has been deeply felt by relatives, friends, former colleagues, and all who knew her.
Born on June 14, 1962, to Leon and Alida (Brandt) Freese of rural Plymouth, Nebraska, Julie was raised in a faith-filled home. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and attended Martin Luther Academy before graduating from Tri County High School. She later earned her nursing degree from University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
Julie devoted her career to nursing, serving in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit at Bryan East Hospital. Colleagues and patients remember her as a compassionate, skilled nurse whose calm demeanor and dedication made a lasting difference in the lives of those she cared for.
On June 18, 1983, she married Mark Nelson, and together they shared 43 years of marriage. Following her retirement, Julie devoted herself to her family, cherishing time with her husband, four daughters, and six grandchildren.
Outside of her career and family life, Julie remained active in her community. She enjoyed participating in Bible study, book club, PEO, SWAK gatherings, Friday Afternoon Club, Mahjong, football tailgates, and traveling with family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Mark; daughters Tori (Bryan) Sones, Ali (Kyle) Dostal, Sami (Matt) Karloff, and Amanda (Keaton) Lewis; brothers Mark (Marlys) Freese and Neal (Linda) Freese; sister-in-law Sandy Freese; six grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Alida Freese; her brother, Bruce Freese; and her beloved dog, Bella.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with Pastor Joel Vogel officiating. Burial will follow at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home & Cemetery. A family prayer service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., and visitation will take place on Sunday, July 5, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., as well as one hour before the funeral service.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church or LightShine Canine Rescue, an organization that was especially meaningful to Julie.
Julia Nelson will be remembered for her compassionate spirit, steadfast faith, and the love she shared with her family, friends, and community. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
