Officers responded shortly after 7:00 a.m. to reports of a serious crash in the 11600 block of North Florida Avenue. Investigators said a Tesla was traveling northbound at what police described as a high rate of speed while a southbound Volkswagen was attempting a left turn into a local dealership.

According to preliminary findings, the vehicles collided as the Volkswagen turned across the northbound lanes. The impact struck the passenger side of the Volkswagen, causing it to overturn.

The Volkswagen’s driver, a man in his mid-30s, sustained critical injuries. Emergency responders provided life-saving treatment at the scene before transporting him for medical care, but he later died from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

The Tesla driver, a man in his early 20s, was also injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Police said he was in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon.

Following the collision, northbound lanes of North Florida Avenue between Fowler Avenue and Bougainvillea Avenue were closed for several hours while investigators documented the scene and collected evidence. The roadway has since reopened.

The Tampa Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Detectives are examining factors including vehicle speeds, the left-turn maneuver, roadway conditions, and any available surveillance or witness evidence to determine the full sequence of events.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision to contact investigators.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
