Firefighters are battling a large wildfire at Whitmoor Common near Guildford, Surrey, after flames broke out on Thursday afternoon, triggering a major emergency response. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area while crews work to contain the rapidly spreading blaze.
According to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 2:15 p.m. following reports of a significant fire on Whitmoor Common. Around a dozen fire engines, along with specialist wildfire units, were deployed to tackle the incident and prevent the flames from spreading across the heathland.
Thick smoke has been visible from surrounding communities, prompting officials to warn that changing wind conditions could carry smoke into nearby neighborhoods and across local roads. Residents living close to the common have been advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution until conditions improve.
Whitmoor Common is a protected heathland and nature reserve that has experienced several wildfires in recent years. Dry vegetation and warm weather have created conditions that allow fires to spread quickly, making containment efforts more challenging for emergency crews.
The Surrey Wildlife Trust has also asked people to avoid visiting the area while the emergency response continues, noting that dry conditions increase the risk of fire and can cause significant damage to sensitive wildlife habitats.
At this stage, no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the wildfire has not been determined. Firefighters remain at the scene working to contain hotspots and stop the fire from spreading further.
Authorities are expected to provide additional updates as firefighting operations continue. Members of the public are encouraged to avoid Whitmoor Common and follow instructions from emergency services until the area has been declared safe.
