Friends, customers, and community members remember him as someone who freely shared both his talents and his time, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Born on November 8, 1978, to Ron and Karen Bernhard, Joel faced significant health challenges from an early age. After developing a brain tumor as a toddler, he underwent multiple surgeries that resulted in the loss of his eyesight. Despite these obstacles, he refused to let adversity define his life, inspiring others with his belief that success comes from focusing on what is possible rather than on limitations.

Joel attended Franklin Elementary School in Oshkosh, where he learned Braille and mobility skills before graduating from Lomira High School. He remained active in school through band, 4-H, forensics, FFA, and the Fond du Lac County Fair. After earning a Culinary Arts degree from Moraine Park Technical College, he pursued his passion for confectionery by opening Confections For Any Occasion in 2001. Even after a devastating fire temporarily closed the business in 2024, he remained determined to rebuild with the encouragement of his staff and the Theresa community.

Throughout his life, Joel endured numerous medical challenges, including multiple surgeries and both liver and kidney transplants. Even during lengthy hospital stays, he stayed actively involved in his business, offering guidance and encouragement to his team. His perseverance, optimism, and deep Christian faith earned the admiration of family, friends, customers, and healthcare professionals.

Joel is survived by his mother, Karen Bernhard; his brother, Mike (Tammy) Bernhard; nieces Samantha Mertens and Sabrina Bernhard; extended family members; loyal employees; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Bernhard; his sister, Angela Bernhard; his grandparents; and his uncle, Ron Schwenk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Theresa Fire Department, or the Theresa Historical Society.

Joel Bernhard will be remembered not only for the exceptional confections he created but also for his remarkable courage, steadfast faith, generous heart, and enduring commitment to serving others. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
