The international lacrosse community is mourning the passing of Jim Weller, who died on June 30, 2026. Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished figures in Canadian and collegiate field lacrosse, Weller’s passing represents a profound loss to the sport. Celebrated for his elite scoring ability, leadership, and enduring commitment to lacrosse, he leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire athletes across generations.

Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, with ties to Pelham and St. Catharines, Weller developed a passion for lacrosse at an early age. His exceptional performances in Ontario’s junior lacrosse system quickly distinguished him as one of the nation’s most promising talents, eventually attracting the attention of University of Massachusetts Amherst head coach Dick Garber.

His 1981 season remains particularly notable, during which he recorded 62 goals and 98 total points, both single-season program records. Over his collegiate career, he also contributed 94 assists, finishing with 256 total points.

Throughout his international career, he was repeatedly named to All-World teams and played a key role in elevating Canada’s presence on the global lacrosse stage.

A Lifelong Ambassador of the Game

Beyond his playing career, Weller remained deeply engaged with the sport through Masters lacrosse and mentorship of younger athletes. He was widely respected for his humility, leadership, humor, and unwavering dedication to growing the game at every level.
